They gave Laughing Bull a role of a wiseman. Your local barber who by simply being part of the neighborhood, knows the "going's on". It's pure speculation, but I think of LB as someone who just knew what was going on. I know plenty of local pot dealers who still know where a fella can score some coke, meth or other more serious drugs. Completely natural and (somewhat) harmless. Let's just say, for example, he was into the business of cannabis. I don't think he was necessarily THE fence for red-eye and certainly wasn't using it himself. culture is certainly more commonly associated with spirituality through herbs and medicines and mind altering experiences, though I think you caught what I was throwing, haha. culture to sound like a bunch of yahoos who takes drugs and roll for days. I hope I didn't offend you or anyone reading this. What you wrote about shamans and how they ingest/use/ritualize their medicines to heal, to experience, to test themselves is absolutely accurate. It makes much more sense for LB to be Native American than for him to be a rabbi or a sadhu. But I think it's important to note the differences for the purpose of their use of what we call drugs and most of the Native American society refers to as medicine.īut I see what you mean. However, I could be completely wrong, as shamans of various cultures have been known to ingest some of what we would call crazy shit (such as toadstool and other poisons) in order to test themselves. I see what you are getting at, but Red Eye seems like WAY too hardcore of a drug for Laughing Bull to have used as medicine. For example, the peyote ritual is a healing ritual, to heal the pains of ones self and turn toward the Great Spirit in a time of turmoil (such as feeling nauseous and possibly crazy from ingesting peyote). I could see how that would be offense to the Native American community, because they see their rituals in a tone of medicine, or healing. Cowboy Bebop was just flavoring the moment IMO. speak was his colorful way of coding what he knew. Is it that far fetched that they wouldn't have evolved to involve themselves with the redeye community? It didn't have to be the aggressive drug red-eye that they used, but Laughing Bull was aware of the red-eyed coyote. were often known to use natural botanical resources to experience a high and find themselves or greater meaning. Maybe Wantanabe and his writers really felt it should be a Native American instead of a priest, rabbi, or otherwise because most of the audience is aware that N.A. I'm sure he was very much involved with the Red Eye/drug community to some extent. My real estimate is that Laughing Bull knew more that just the tales of old. why not? Why are we looking into greater meaning that Spike in his infinite abandon of faith, hope, and reliance on anything but himself has decided to trust some old school Native American type. I had made mention that I thought of LB as a fence, sort of tongue in cheek.
